Nowra to Kangaroo Valley 20km - 30min
Kangaroo Valley is a must see destination for
any visitor to the region. It is not only
a stunningly beautiful valley surrounded
by steep escarpments but also a fine
destination to discover native rainforest, see
wildlife, visit an award winning historic village
and stay in boutique accommodation.
Reputed to be one of only seven fully enclosed
valleys in the world, it is a wonder in itself. The
combination of rainforest clinging to the steep
slopes of the escarpment, the splendor of the
river as it weaves its way through the
countryside, the patchwork quilt of farms,
and the small creeks which cross the valley,
all make it a special and strikingly attractive
place. In fact George Evans, Australia’s first
surveyor explorer, declared “no painter could beautify”
when he first saw “The Valley”.
Kangaroo Valley is home to all sorts of native wildlife such as kangaroos, wallabies, wombats and exotic
native birds such as parrots, lyrebirds and cockatoos. There are plenty of ways to explore the district - Rent
a canoe, a mountain bike or, for the adventurous, ride a horse to the top of the escarpment.
Others may simply wish to sip wine at the local vineyard.
The magnificent environment surrounding Kangaroo Valley makes it an easy destination
for visitors to enjoy. At the centre of the district lies Kangaroo Valley Village, an historic
settlement recognised by the National Trust, which has classified the village itself and five
of its buildings. It is also home to the Pioneer Museum which shows early settler life with
original homes, clothes and lifestyle exhibits. Kangaroo Valley was part of the tribal lands
of the Wodi-Wodi Aborigines when in 1817, Charles Throsby, an explorer and Captain Richard
Brooks, a cattleman, opened up the area to European settlement.
Today the village has a wide range of cafes and restaurants serving modern Australian cuisine,
quirky craft shops and local galleries. First class accommodation includes bed and breakfasts
and self contained cottages that are located in picturesque settings throughout Kangaroo Valley.
