
Yarram is an Aboriginal word for ‘plenty
of water’. There are many interesting old
buildings in Yarram including the old Court
House, an architectural gem now serving
as an information centre. Just a few kilometres
south are the small townships of Alberton and
Tarraville. Both are among the oldest settlements
in Victoria and feature some striking original
architecture. Or take a detour to Tarra Bulga
National Park, a cool climate rainforest with
scenic walks and, picnic facilities.
Port Albert,Victoria’s first established port has
berthed ships from Europe and America and welcomed thousands of Chinese on their wayto the goldfields. The quaint fishing village is off the beaten track and, consequently, more than40 buildings in a Georgian and Victorian
architectural style still exist.
The Australian mainland’s southernmost point, Wilsons Promontory National Park, famous for its abundance of flora and fauna, wild ocean beaches and mountain views, has incomparable bush and coastal scenery, as well as acclaimed tracks and trails to explore. From the accommodation centre at Tidal River to the white sands of Squeaky Beach,Wilson’s Prom, offers spectacular views. Kangaroos, birds, echidnas, wombats and other wildlife can
be spotted in this famous National Park.
Fishing enthusiasts can find excellent surf and estuary fishing around Venus Bay and Tarwin Lower, and at Coal Creek Heritage Village in Korumburra you can experience the life and times of a nineteenth century coal-mining
village. While in the area, taste a wide variety of premium cool climate wines at the cellar door or sample quality meats, fine cheeses and fresh local produce in the cafes and stores of Koonwarra.
Surrounded by some of the best surf and swimming beaches in Victoria, Phillip Island has a reputation as a family coastal getaway. Don’t miss Victoria’s most popular natural attraction – the nightly parade of hundreds of little penguins at Phillip Island. The island is also home to Australia’s largest colony of fur seals. At the island’s Koala Conservation Centre treetop boardwalks get you closer than you would have thought possible. Each year, Phillip Island switches gear for the 500cc Motorcycle Grand Prix, held in October over three days.
The Mornington Peninsula is replete with breathtaking scenery and the option to explore both ocean and bay beaches. The Peninsula is renowned for its exceptional wineries and restaurants. Fertile hills roll down to iridescent beaches and tranquil harbours and golf courses spread out beside cliffs and rocky beaches. The Artists' Trail from Frankston to Cape Schanck highlights scenes that inspired some of Australia's best known painters. The Sorrento and Portsea piers host fishing, dive tours and dolphin and seal swims. An hourly car ferry leaves Sorrento for Queenscliff and the Great Ocean Road or Melbourne is just under 2 hours away.
