Historic Mogo is home to the South Coast’s
greatest creature feature, Mogo Zoo, which
houses exotic and endangered species. Stop
to see indigenous galleries featuring works from
talented Koori artists, or even pan for gold in
true pioneer tradition.
Narooma is an Aboriginal name meaning “clear
blue water”. Famous for its fishing, Narooma
attracts keen fishermen each year to try their
luck. Montague Island Nature Reserve, 8km
offshore, is home to a large colony of little
penguins and seabirds. Seals, dolphins, turtles
and migrating whales are regularly spotted
in the waters around the island, which
is accessible via boat charter from Narooma.
The quaint villages of Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba
are an essential stop off. Central Tilba is now
heritage-listed by the National Trust and
is a working village where you can see a wood turner, cobbler, baker and leather-maker at work, visit the numerous art and craft stores and taste the famous Tilba Club Cheese at the ABC Cheese Factory. Foxglove Spire Gardens in Tilba Tilba is one of Australia’s most romantic woodland gardens, featuring roses, wisteria and its namesake foxglove.
Experience the culture of the local Yuin people at Umbarra Cultural Centre - try your handat spear and boomerang throwing, as well as ochre painting, or take a guided trip to Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) with Koori elders. Bermagui is
known as the birthplace of game fishing. Charter boats offer deep sea, dive and game fishing trip, for black marlin or yellow fin tuna.
Bega is famous for its rich dairy farming industry and some of the best cheeses in Australia so don’t miss a visit to the factory. Tathra is a popular holiday spot close to the spectacular Mimosa Rocks National Park.
Merimbula’s local theme park, Magic Mountain, is a hit with the kids featuring a roller coaster, mountain slide, waterslide, mini golf and a mini grand prix track. At the Merimbula Marina, you can hire a fishing boat, take a sunset cruise or go scuba diving.
Eden is an old whaling town located on beautiful Twofold Bay. The town’s whaling industry has long been abandoned in favour of whale-watching, and boat charters offer a chance to see these marine creatures as they migrate along the coast. The Killer Whale Museum provides fascinating insight into the area’s rich history. Nearby Boydtown is well
worth a visit, as is Mount Imlay behind Eden, where you’ll be treated to sweeping vistas of the NSW coast to the north and south to the Victorian Border.
